Song Heng Fishball Noodles: A Story Behind Every Bowl
Song Heng Fishball Noodles: A Story Behind Every Bowl
Behind every bowl of noodles lies a story. For Song Heng Fishball Noodles at Telok Blangah, this feature is part of our Singapore hawker photography series, capturing food heritage that spans more than 60 years.
Helmed by a dedicated husband and wife team, and run together with his brother and sister-in-law, this humble stall has been part of the neighbourhood for decades. Long before settling here, they began at Kim Tian Road, where two shop units were once filled with the sounds and smells of fishball making. Each morning, they would wake before dawn, filleting fish, grinding and shaping every ball by hand, a rhythm perfected over a lifetime.
Today, at Telok Blangah Crescent Market, the stall still draws queues of loyal customers. The broth is light and clear, the noodles springy, and the handmade fishballs carry the unmistakable bounce that only comes from care and craft. It is food that tastes of heritage, patience, and love.
Photographing them in their element, prepping, cooking, moving with the quiet confidence of experience, was a privilege. Their hands, marked by years of work, tell a story of resilience. Their smiles, gentle and unassuming, reflect a life built around serving others.
Hawkers like them are part of Singapore’s living heritage.
Song Heng is more than just a stall; it is a reminder of what dedication over decades looks like, and how much of our culture is built around simple bowls of comfort food shared across generations.
